Julie Ayre

Dr Julie Ayre is a public health researcher and senior research fellow within the Sydney Health Literacy Lab, supported by an NHMRC Emerging Leader Research Fellowship (2023-2027).

Academic roles include Digital Health Literacy Stream lead at the Sydney Health Literacy Lab, co-chair for the Digital Health Informatics Network's, 2026 Digital Health Week Conference, and Associate Editor for the journal Health Literacy and Communication Open. Dr Ayre is a Senior Academic Advisor to the NSW Statewide Health Literacy Hub, which supports health literacy skills development in the local health care workforce. She is scientific advisor for the National Health Literacy Framework.

Dr Ayre takes a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative), person-centred, and multidisciplinary approach that focuses on using digital technology to support health literacy initiatives and improve health equity in our health services. Through her research she has led development of the Health Literacy Editor, an evidence-based tool that gives real-time objective feedback on the complexity of health information. Current projects are exploring opportunities for AI to improve the accessibility of health communication.

She is passionate about making health information easy to access and understand, and translating research into real-world impact.
