Ray Moynihan

Dr Ray Moynihan (BA, PhD) is a part-time Senior Research Fellow in The University of Sydney School of Public Health. He is part of the Sydney Health Literacy Lab and the Wiser Healthcare Research Collaboration.

Ray’s research aims to understand and address the complex challenges of overdiagnosis and overuse, with a specific contemporary focus on investigating and responding to misleading medical information online.

Ray has close to 100 peer-reviewed publications in the world’s leading journals, including in The Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the BMJ. His work regularly generates media interest and has been covered in influential outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Guardian.

A former journalist at the ABC and The Australian Financial Review, and columnist at the BMJ, Ray’s written 4 books on the business of medicine, including Selling Sickness, published in over 12 languages.

Ray’s journalism, research and translation activities have impacted public debate and policy deliberations globally about the problem of too much medicine, with his work cited in policy documents from WHO, World Bank, OECD and the Australian Department of Health.

Ray helped initiate the international Preventing Overdiagnosis conference and has served on the executive of the Wiser Healthcare research collaboration. He’s won many awards, including an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship and a Harkness Fellowship undertaken at Harvard University
